Later in the book, Johnny finally accepts he is going to die. Very slowly the hand went up. He felt his head tentatively, felt it again with full palm, and then, limply, helplessly, hopelessly, the hand fell down, and this was the only time I ever saw his eyes actually spill over with tears.

I too agree that it should be legally and morally open for choice to anyone suffering from a terminal. By doing so he gives Fate and Chance direct power over death. Although Johnny was faced with death, Johnny faced death with courage throughout the book. We may as well be reading an obituary when we learn of Johnny's death and of the facts of his life, but by the end of the book we feel we know him as a real person, and such a miniscule announcement of his death does him little justice.
